Rocky Mount Brewmill

In 2007, Capitol Broadcasting Company purchased the expansive Rocky Mount Mill site consisting of roughly 300,000 sq. ft. of mill factory buildings, thirty vacant mill house lots, and 30 mill houses. The 50–60-acre site is adjacent to the Tar River, which has powered the plant since the early 1800s when it was originally constructed. The mill has been reconstructed twice due to fires, once during the Civil War and once in 1869. The resiliency, community revitalization opportunity, and availability attracted the Goodmon family at Capitol Broadcasting. Similar to the redevelopment endeavor of Durham’s American Tobacco District, improvements to Rocky Mount Mills could propel economic growth for the surrounding area. The design team envisions a self-sustaining, mixed-use community for people to work, live, create, and enjoy. The mill houses immediately adjacent to the factory have been converted into office space, restaurants, and breweries. The craft beer movement that is sweeping the State has prompted the local community college to offer courses on the subject. In partnership with the college, Rocky Mount Mill will designate space for classes, bottling, brewing, tasting, and selling local beer. The mill houses in the neighboring blocks are being renovated for lease as single-family homes. The mill itself will incorporate living space as well, in addition to commercial and retail space.
